Children with Leukaemia
Project grants for research into the aetiology of childhood cancers
The progress that has been made in advancing understanding and treatment of childhood leukaemia hasn’t necessarily been paralleled in other forms of childhood cancer. In addition, it is likely that some of the different childhood cancers share a common aetiology.
To address this, we have broadened our objectives to encompass all childhood cancers and we are now calling for applications for projects which will advance our understanding of the aetiology of childhood cancers.
Priority areas
We will accept applications for any project investigating the aetiology of leukaemia or any other childhood cancer.
We are particularly interested in the role of early exposures in the aetiology of childhood cancers. By this we mean early exposure (including pre-conception, in utero and early childhood) to environmental risk factors in the broadest sense (including, for example, such factors as infectious exposure and diet).
We are interested in the investigation of how mutations arise and in the basic biological mechanisms of childhood cancer development – and the impact of environmental factors on these mechanisms.
We will not fund large case-control epidemiological studies except those which propose to use existing data or molecular epidemiology to test specific aetiological hypotheses.
Who may apply?
Applications must be submitted by a UK research institution. We will consider funding international collaborations where researchers from a UK institution play a leading role. In the event that a grant is awarded to such a collaboration, the UK institution must take overall responsibility for management of the project and must undertake to administer the funding.
What can be funded?
Our project grants are intended to provide funds for the employment of suitably qualified staff and the purchase of essential equipment and consumables for projects which will further our understanding of the aetiology of childhood cancers.
Awards will be made for a period of up to three years.
Please note that we only pay direct research costs. We do not contribute to institutional overhead costs nor do we contribute towards the cost of tenured posts.
How much funding is available?
The total funding set aside for this grant round is £2 million. There is no pre-determined maximum limit for individual applications, but we do expect to fund a number of projects under this call so applications for close to £2 million will not be considered.
How to apply
There is a two-stage application process; the first stage is submission of an outline application and the deadline for this is 27 May 2011.
Your outline application will be reviewed by our grant panel who will decide whether to invite a full application for the proposed work.
We expect to announce final awards in December 2011.
