Case-Control Study of Intra-Cranial Haemorrhage in Thrombocytopenic Haematology Patients

Date: Mar 23, 2011

Why is this study important?

  • Intra-cranial haemorrhage is one of the most serious side-effects of severe thrombocytopenia in haematology patients.
  • Intra-cranial haemorrhage is rare, but has devastating consequences. Death or major morbidity in the majority of cases.
  • It is unknown why some patients bleed and others don’t.
  • The risk of significant bleeding is poorly correlated with the platelet count.

Aims of the study

  • To identify risk factors for serious haemorrhage.
  • Use information from this study to guide the management of patients in the future.
  • Decrease a patient’s exposure to prophylactic platelet transfusions if they have a low risk of bleeding.
  • Develop intensified management strategies for patients with a high risk of bleeding. These could include higher platelet transfusion thresholds, maintaining higher haematocrits, maintaining higher fibrinogen levels or use of other agents such as tranexamic acid.
