New BSH Awards
Source: BSH
The BSH has recently reassessed its portfolio of grants and awards. Two significant changes have been made which should enable the Society’s aim of encouraging and developing training and research in to all aspect of haematology.
Two BSH Scientific Fellowships, each with a value of up to £7,500, have been created to fund early-stage scientists to visit another laboratory or hospital overseas to learn or develop a new technique that will benefit haematology in the UK.
These awards replace those previously offered for up to £2,500. There will not be any specific deadline for applications, which will be reviewed by the Scientific Secretary with advice from other members of the Committee.
In addition, the Society has decided to establish a new award of a BSH Start-up Fellowship for newly appointed non-clinical lecturers or clinical senior lecturers working in any area of haematology. Applicants must be within 5 years of their appointment and be members of the BSH.
The BSH will advertise for one award each year and the maximum amount of funding will be £65,000 per annum for two years. Further details of the application process and closing dates will be advertised on the BSH website and in the British Journal of Haematology in early 2010.
The desire to support Early Stage Researchers across haematology is shown by an increase, from 7 to 10, in the number of BSH Start-up awards for up to £7000. There is no closing date for these awards, but each application is externally reviewed and the applicant must be a member of the BSH.
The BSH will continue to offer its other awards. The undergraduate medical student elective awards, for up to £600, and the Annual Scientific Meeting awards, for up to £500, are available.
The ASM awards are specifically for non-clinical applicants including BMS, Clinical Scientists and Nurses. Travel Scholarships for up to £1000 are available for attendance at haematology-related conferences, with preference for travel awards to ASH given to those with an oral or poster presentation.
Other major awards that the BSH are currently involved with are the Joint LRF/BSH Clinical Training Fellowship, the BSH/BSHT/Lifeblood PhD studentship for red cell research and, more recently, the joint BSH/Thalassaemia UK/Sickle Cell Society/Department of Health Clinical Training Fellowship for Haemostasis Research.
