Cascadia Haematology

Cascadia Haematology is an organisation focused on the career development of Consultant and Middle Grade Haematologists. Over the last decade Cascadia has witnessed its ascent from a lab-based speciality to one of the most expansive clinical workloads in acute medicine. In spite of this there remains a significant shortfall in Consultant and Middle Grade Haematologists. Cascadia offer flexible, tailored and highly lucrative work to cater to each individual’s lifestyle and circumstances.
Our objective is twofold:
- Support and enhance doctors’ careers
- Maintain departmental staffing levels to ensure high quality patient care
We have a 6-12 month contract in January 2010 for a Consultant/Middle Grade Haematologist.
Please contact Michael Carrington on 01375 671 222 or visit our website.
Participate in a survey for £250

I am searching for a haematologist who is interested in participating in a survey. He/she should be a kind of clinical/medical director, so that he/she is responsible for the therapy and he/she should be involved in hip and knee replacement surgeries, so surgeries in which the patient loses a lot of blood.
The Eumara AG is a market research institute based in Germany.
We are currently conducting a survey on
“Patient management in major elective surgery”
and would appreciate your opinion on various aspects. For this purpose, I would like to invite you to take part in an event, a face-to-face interview on 10th September 2009 in a studio in London. You can choose a time between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.
The interview will last about 45 minutes and as a token of appreciation for your participation, you will receive £250.
To see if you are qualified for the survey, I need to talk to you in advance. For this purpose please give me a call or send me an email/fax with a time I can call you.

Supervisory Skills in the Workplace
Central to the learning of trainees is their relationship with their Educational Supervisor. The responsibilities required by professional bodies are extensive, requiring a degree of educational, managerial and interpersonal expertise. The PMETB Standards for Training require that supervisors must ‘have relevant qualifications and experience’ and ‘must undertake appropriate training’. This workshop covers the skills and knowledge required by Educational Supervisors, and provides practical guidance on their role. This enables supervisors to create an effective learning environment for junior doctors.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: • Identify the role, knowledge, skills, and behaviours of an effective supervisor • Set clear objectives for trainees • Provide constructive, effective feedback to trainees • Recognise the importance of reflection as part of appraisal • Challenge a gap in the performance of a trainee • Identify how the Annual Review of Competence Progression informs development • Write an effective supervisor’s report
Researched, designed and delivered by a team of experienced medical educationalists and doctors, this workshop will provide delegates with a unique opportunity to develop key supervisory skills, which can be effectively implemented in the workplace. This workshop is approved for 5 external non-clinical CPD credits by the Royal College of Physicians.
Appraisal Skills for Revalidation

The General Medical Council (GMC) has described revalidation as one element of the quality framework which aims to address two distinct but complementary purposes ensuring patient safety and improving the quality of patient care. Appraisal is a key part of the revalidation process.
This one-day workshop, designed specifically for consultant appraisal, will meet the needs of both appraisers and appraisees. The workshop will cover the following topics: The nature and purpose of consultant appraisal The changing role of appraisal and how this links directly to Revalidation The evidence needed for appraisal The skills required by appraisers and the structure of the appraisal meeting The personal development plan
Delegates will also be given the opportunity to practise appraisal skills and to analyse ways of tackling concerns over doctors in difficulty. Facilitators for this one-day workshop will be a combination of skilled educationalists who have had direct involvement in the Revalidation Pilot, and doctors currently undertaking appraisals using the new Revalidation structure and documentation.

VSO opportunity in Malawi

VSO are seeking a haematology lecturer for the College of Medicine, Blantyre, Malawi. This is a unique opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of haematology as a specialty in Malawi. There has until recently been no clinical haematology service in the country, but circumstances are now ripe for this to be developed. There are opportunities for the applicant to contribute to many areas ranging from provision and development of clinical and laboratory services to design of undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes. There are also tremendous opportunities for research.
The placement would suit post-FRCPath haematologists; experienced biomedical scientists specialising in haematology or transfusion would also have much to contribute. Senior applicants with experience at managerial level and who have direct experience of historical techniques and treatment regimens might find this a particularly rewarding placement, but there are potential opportunities for applicants with a wide range of interests and backgrounds.
A minimum of 1 year but preferably 2 years committment is required. You will receive flights, housing and a local living allowance and NHS pension contributions will be continued. Please contact http://www.vso.org.uk/volunteering for further information; the current volunteer would also be pleased to receive informal enquiries (email tom.latham@ed.ac.uk).

The effects of cancer treatment on reproductive functions
New guidance produced by the Royal College of Physicians, The Royal College of Radiologists and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists provides the latest information on the effects of cancer treatment on reproductive functions.
Approximately 11,000 patients in the 15–40 age group are diagnosed with cancer each year, and for many of these younger cancer patients fertility is or will become extremely important. The report aims to improve standards of management of fertility for these patients, calling for nationwide provision and funding, and for a scientific approach to future developments.
This guidance is essential reading for all clinicians and health professionals involved in cancer care.
